Our next 20x20 collaborator is Candace Nelson, pastry chef and founder of Sprinkles, the world’s first cupcake bakery. From the get-go her cupcakes, a “sophisticated take” on the American classic, had people lining up in droves. Accolades from sweet tooth celebs, like Oprah, Reese Witherspoon and Katie Holmes helped ignite a cupcake craze and soon the entire country was hungry for a taste. To satisfy the craving, Sprinkles now boasts 40 locations nationwide and Candace invented the world’s first cupcake ATMs – talk about instant gratification! Her talents go far beyond the delectable desserts that she created by hand in her kitchen so many years ago. She’s authored a NY times bestselling cookbook, added cookie and ice cream lines into the mix, hosts an amazing podcast called “Live to Eat”, is co-creator of Pizzana, an acclaimed pizza destination, and stars as judge on Cupcakes Wars and Sugar Rush. To say she is inspiring is an understatement – she’s built an empire through sheer tenacity, limitless dedication and endless creativity. When we discussed what kind of piece to make together, it seemed only natural to symbolize where it all began – with a cupcake! To make this collaboration even sweeter, she’s decided that the proceeds of sales will go to No Kid Hungry, and organization that “works tirelessly to ensure that all children get the healthy food they need to thrive”.
What was the idea or inspiration behind this piece?
I’m a pastry chef and founder of Sprinkles, the world’s first cupcake bakery. For decades, I’ve seen how a baked good can bring joy to others - it is why I’ve always loved baking. I hope this necklace brings joy to those wearing it as well as those who admire it on others.
What was your favorite part of the jewelry design process with Zoe?
I’ve never designed jewelry before! I love how Zoe considers every detail. I’m really proud of the result!
How does designing jewelry differ from your creative process?
When I have an idea for a recipe, I can head straight into the kitchen, bake it up and get my end product within just a couple hours. I can tweak things as I go along relatively easily. With jewelry, there is a lot of creative concepting prior to ever seeing the end product.
Why is this charity that you chose close to your heart?
All children deserve healthy food, every day. No Kid Hungry works tirelessly to ensure that all children get the healthy food they need to thrive. Their work during the days of Coronavirus is even more urgent as children who depend on school to provide food are particularly vulnerable.
What's your favorite way to style the piece?
This necklace is perfect for layering! It’s the perfect length to pair with one or two longer necklaces.
